using mobile phones whilst driving

A quiet residential street in Jabal Amman, a terrible screeching noise and neighbours rushing out to help the driver of a small four wheel drive that had turned upside down. No other car involved. Seems the female driver was on her mobile phone and smoking a cigarette.

The number of times I have had near misses because of drivers being distracted with talking on their mobiles is too numerous. Surely the driver can pull over and answer the phone or, if not, wait until a suitable moment? It is such a danger to all the other people on the road and IT IS AGAINST THE LAW, although this particular point does not seem to put people off. T

Unfortunately, the fact that using a mobile while driving is against the law isn't enough of a deterent. If the police would make a real effort to ticket any mobile using driver on the spot for JD 50 - I guarantee the law would be respected quickly. The only way to have a law upheld is to enforce it!

I constantly marvel at peoples' lack of an instinct for self preservation, even if they do not give a tinker's cuss for any one else ! S

Dunno about u guys, but I can smoke and talk on the phone while driving, without affecting my driving abilities...although its arguable since I'm a bad driver anyways, so i don't think that anybody can tell the difference :P.

Everytime there is someone ahead of me driving in a strange manner, once I get next to them, there is the phone at their ear. Saw a dump truck doing dangerous moves on the road in from airport and sure enough, he was SMOKING and talking on the phone... When can we start doing some citizen arrests???? And I want a baton, too. ;)

Hi Nicole ... quite right, because until the police quit smoking while patrolling the streets, don't expect any drastic changes!! J (lol)

... and ps how about this one .... I pulled over and parked my car in a 'suitable place' (wide road, no obvious obstruction, no road signs etc) on the road leading away from the airport to make an urgent mobile phone call one day, and the next thing I know a police motorcyclist is pulling up behind me to give me a ticket for illegal parking .... ?? mommabean, you are a wonderful lady but hope that when you do your yearly licence for your car you get plenty of fines for using your mobile! Try and change your habits, it is such a dangerous one and we can all wait for a few minutes!
J - did you get a ticket for illegal parking?????
