potatoes

I always find it quite a shock whilst shopping for food in UK as the supermarkets there have an overabundance of goods and varieties. After looking at the potatoes today in Cozmo I just thought, ok they are potatoes, but what about King Edwards, Desiree, Maris Piper and the other nearly 80 varieties one can find in UK alone. We just get potatoes and I wonder where they are from? and if they are good for roasting, boiling or chips?

Well, in the great scheme of things I suppose it does not really matter?! T

Not only was I shocked at the prices of tomatoes in the US when I first came here (the equivalent of 3 JDs/kg of bandora was blasphemous for me), but I also could not determine whether Roma, steak, on the vine, regular or the organic variety of any of these was best to use.

I don't know about that Eyad!!! Go to a supermarket in some parts of the UK and you will find people from all over the world! Actually Jameed I wanted to write about other veggies as well as there seems to be endless varieties of each fruit or veg on offer and it is difficult to choose. At least we do not have that problem here! T

I agree, this is probably partially as a result of the emergance of 'foodie' culture in the UK recently and people starting to pay alot of attention to what they cook, eat etc.. But also I think that the potato has a much bigger role in English food than in Middle Eastern food.
On the other hand (perhaps the result of all this conveniance and variety) is that all fruits in England seem to taste the same, its only the texture that is different but the taste is always similar to eating a sweet cardboard!

Oh Onzlo-thats a bit harsh! You are shopping for the wrong food at the wrong stores. Go for organic Grown in the UK) and believe me it will taste fine. It is the imported stuff which has all been soaked in preservatives tastes so bland and cardboard like. A mango imported from Jordan will never taste the same when bought in a supermarket outside the country. And do come and try our garden produce in the Scottish Borders but only in season. The Brussel Sprouts ready now are yummy. Ahlan was Sahlan. Baitna baitkom. (Get onto www.huttonian.blogspot.com and look at the iamges from July and August to see what I mean )
